The Success of Succession Planning:
Achieving Strategic Goals Through Leadership Forecasting

Leaders lead their organization into an ever changing world. They create the vision, they provide the energy, and the guidance to keep their organization relevant in the market place. They do all those things and more if they are there to do them. Unfortunately, leaders retire, they take other jobs, they go on to other pursuits leaving a vacuum behind.

HR bears a strategic responsibility to keep the leadership pipeline filled to capacity to protect against expected and unexpected leadership turnover. Succession planning is the strategic tool. It is the starting point. It is more than a document on a shelf. It is greater than an occasional talent review meeting. It is an HR-driven initiative. It requires strong, strategic HR leadership. It builds a learning culture. It makes predicting current and future leadership needs a regular part of the leadership conversation. It makes leadership development a fundamental competency for current leaders throughout the organization.

This presentation will re-energize your commitment to strategic succession planning. It will challenge your traditional perspective on what it means to identify, assess, and prepare high-potentials for future leadership assignments. Bring a sharp pencil. You will want to make notes to take back to use the ideas and concepts you learn to develop and retain critical leadership talent to have a positive impact on the bottom line and future success of your organization.

Learning Goals:

  • Understand and articulate the relationship between strategic planning and succession planning
  • Convince senior leadership of the value and benefit of engaging in a robust strategic planning process
  • Lead the effort to make strategic planning a strong, living component of the corporate culture
